Nigel’s May Covid-19 Newsletter – Virtual Business Roundtables

Subscribe to my future newsletters here

Dear Constituent,

Thank you to everyone who joined my Facebook live Q&A meeting last week. I’m organising another one for next week, so please do keep sending any questions you have through. If you missed the Q&A but would still like to watch it, you can watch it back here.

As always, if you have a personal or specific issue you would like to raise with me, or for a virtual surgery appointment, do also continue to contact me by replying to this email or by ringing 01773 744341.

Virtual business roundtable meetings:

There’s a long road to recovery from this national emergency, but our local business community will be at the forefront of protecting jobs and stimulating future growth in Amber Valley, so I’m keen to do everything I can to support local businesses and their employees.

Therefore, alongside the Facebook Q&A sessions, over this week and next week I’m holding virtual business roundtable meetings. If you’re a local business owner and would be interested in attending the video conference, please reply to this email or ring 01773 744341 with your details for more information.

I know the current situation is incredibly challenging for everyone, including local businesses. This Government is putting in place a wide range of support, such as Small Business Rate Relief Grants, the Job Retention Scheme, Bounce Back Loans and Coronavirus Business Interruption Loans. However, it would be useful to hear feedback from Amber Valley businesses on these schemes and discuss any issues or concerns so that I can feed these back into the Treasury and the Government.

Covid-19 support and advice page:

As a reminder from my last email, you can find links to and details of the latest health advice, local support and Government support for individuals and businesses on the Covid-19 support page on my website here

Over the weekend, the Government announced an additional £617 million discretionary grant fund for local authorities, to help certain small businesses who weren’t eligible for the SBRR grant, such as B&Bs, those in shared spaces and regular market traders. These grants will be at the discretion of local councils and you can find out more here.

Virtual Parliament & Committees:

The currently mainly virtual Parliament and committees are all running and working, and you can follow parliamentary business on Parliament.live.tv here

I’ve been continuing to participate in select committee meetings and asking questions in the House. This included using the opportunity of Cabinet Office questions yesterday and a debate on PPE to highlight the fantastic work being done by local Amber Valley businesses and schools in making and supplying PPE, and how this can be made easier. You can find the full details of my question, and the reply from the Secretary of State, here

Today, in Health Questions, I raised the important issue of continuing cancer treatments; you can find all my recent speeches and questions in the House here as they’re uploaded and updated regularly.

Street Watch:

As always, if there are any street repairs in your area, such as potholes, pavement repairs or broken street lights, you can report these issues and concerns to me quickly and easily here so I can ask for the repairs to be investigated and addressed.

GDPR and privacy notice:

Data laws have recently changed with the introduction of the new GDPR legislation. You can find my office’s privacy policy here and, if you don’t want to receive these emails anymore, you can unsubscribe here.
