Eurocell Great Plastic Pick Up at Alfreton Park:
I recently joined Eurocell employees for their Great Plastic Pick Up litter picking and clean-up event at Alfreton Park. We collected lots of bin bags of litter – thanks to Eurocell for organising, and to all who gave up their time and took part.

Hand hygiene campaign update:
I recently took part in a debate on raising standards of infection prevention and control in the NHS to continue my campaign to improve hand hygiene standards. This is an important issue which currently leads to 5000 deaths annually, and the World Health Organisation has estimated that half of these deaths are preventable with effective hand hygiene. So, the debate was a welcome opportunity to keep up the pressure for further measures to encourage people to clean their hands and prevent infection. Improving school standards:
During recent questions in the House, I highlighted the important issue of raising educational attainment at schools in Amber Valley. I’m pleased the Secretary of State for Education confirmed prioritising areas with low attainment is at the heart of narrowing the gap, along with spreading good practice through the system.
Tax avoidance and evasion:
This month the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Bill came back before the House. Excitingly, an amendment I supported on the creation of public registers of beneficial ownership of companies registered in British Overseas Territories (OTs), gained the support of the Government and was added to the Bill. The passing of this cross-party amendment signifies a great moment in the fight against corruption and money-laundering.
Since the UK and the OTs are committed to tackling serious criminals and corruption then it is right that we have public registers ahead of it becoming the international standard, as set by the Financial Action Task Force. These public registers allow charities, NGOs and others to scrutinise and expose dirty money and those associated with it. If we set this standard, then others around the world will follow.
Industrial Strategy & competition update:
Following the recently published Green Paper on “Modernising Consumer Markets”, I asked the Secretary of State how he is ensuring the industrial strategy benefits consumers, whether the competition regime in the UK is fit for purpose and if there are sufficient resources to enable it to review all the major deals.

Committees:
Work & Pensions Committee:
In recent committee meetings, we’ve continued our inquiries into Motability, the rollout of Universal Credit and defined benefit pensions. Read more about these, and other evidence, sessions here, and find out more about upcoming inquiries here.
Northern Ireland Affairs Committee:
In the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee, we’ve been looking further into the impact of Brexit, on the border and fisheries in Northern Ireland, as well as continuing to look at devolution and democracy. You can find details of the evidence sessions to date and the committee’s upcoming business here.
Backbench Business Committee:
I’ve recently also joined the Backbench Business Committee, which considers requests for debates from any backbench MPs on any subject, and then decides how to allocate the limited Parliamentary time it has at its disposal. This has included scheduling recent debates on a wide variety of issues including plastic bottles and coffee cups, cancer treatments and terrorism victims’ compensation. Column:
You can find my latest newspaper column here, which looks at progress in the House on my long campaign against corruption and money laundering through successful amendments to the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Bill.
Street Watch:
As always, if there are any street repairs in your area, such as potholes, pavement repairs or broken street lights, you can report these issues and concerns to me quickly and easily here so I can ask for the repairs to be investigated and addressed.
Surgeries:
I regularly hold surgeries to give you the opportunity to meet with me and discuss any concerns or problems you may have. These are held on Friday evenings between 5pm and 7pm.
