Welcome to my latest newsletter to keep you updated on my work in Parliament and around Amber Valley.
As always, you’ll find a selection of what I’ve been up to over the last few months and details of upcoming events. You’ll also find the usual information about my columns, surgeries and how to contact me.
Leadership Contest:
Following the Prime Minister’s resignation last month, myself and fellow Conservative members of Parliament voted in several rounds to determine which two candidates would make it to the final vote.
In my last newsletter I launched a leadership survey to get your views on your preferred candidate of the original ten and what your main policy priorities are. Boris Johnson came out a clear favourite, with 43% of the vote, and it was clear that delivering Brexit remains a priority for the majority of my constituents.
In the weeks leading up to the vote, I met with almost all of the candidates, with the aim of understanding what each of their Brexit plan would be should they take office. I came to the conclusion that Boris would be the best candidate to deliver the Brexit that my constituents voted for over three years ago.
First and foremost, Boris is a true Brexiteer. He was part of the team that initially campaigned for us to leave the European Union, and it seems only fitting to let him finish the job he started. I believe his experience in high office, both as Mayor of London and as Foreign Secretary, hold him in good stead to become our next Prime Minister. It is my opinion that his experience, combined with his familiarity among the electorate, will go a long way in uniting the party and restoring confidence in the government.
Heanor Town Centre Regeneration – Future High Streets Fund Progress:
I’m delighted that Amber Valley Borough Council’s bid to this Government’s £675 million Future High Streets Fund, to help transform and regenerate our town centres, has been selected to progress to the next stage.
This means the Council can now access up to £150,000 of funding to progress a bid for up to £25 million to transform Heanor Town Centre. You can read the letter from the Minister with details about the project here. The fund received over 300 bids, so it’s fantastic that Heanor’s bid has been recognised and selected for progression.
I will continue to support this bid (you can read my supporting letter from earlier this year here), and I’d welcome any suggestions or priorities local residents have to help create the strongest bid, ensure we can make a real difference and attract investment to the town.
‘Meet Your MP’ event – Horsley Woodhouse:
I’m holding my next ‘Meet your MP’ residents’ evening in Horsley Woodhouse this Friday, 12th July 2019 from 6pm. I understand Brexit is a priority at the moment, and so there will be the opportunity to discuss this, alongside any questions, concerns and other ideas.

Coach trip to Parliament – October 2019:
Following last year’s successful coach trips to Parliament, I’m organising a further coach trip to Westminster in October 2019.
The day trip offers the opportunity to see what goes on in Parliament, and includes a Q&A session with me to discuss the role of an MP.

Summer Tour of Amber Valley:
Over the end of July and August, Parliament will be on Summer Recess, and so I’ll be catching up with businesses, groups, charities and residents across Amber Valley.
I’m organising a summer tour to visit all parts of the constituency and see as many people as possible – please get in touch if you’d like me to visit your business or group.

PMQs – Anti-corruption:
During recent Prime Minister’s Questions I continued my campaign to tackle corruption and tax avoidance by increasing transparency, particularly around company ownership. You can read my full question, and the Prime Minister’s reply, here.
Derby Telegraph Column:

Public Accounts Committee:
In recent Public Accounts Committee meetings, we’ve been looking at local government spending and penalty charge notices in healthcare, which several constituents have recently contacted me about. You can find out more about the Committee, and the upcoming sessions, here.
Work & Pensions Committee:
This month, the Work & Pensions Committee has been looking at a wide range of topics, including school holiday support, the pensions regulator and financial support for the bereaved. You can read more about these inquiries here.
Northern Ireland Affairs Committee:
We’ve continued to focus on the restoration of devolved powers to Northern Ireland, which you can read more about here. In this way, I’ve continued to raise the issue of the restoration of Executive powers in Northern Ireland, and the current functioning of the government there/the possibility of a further election, which you can read more about here and here. These contributions were part of debates in the Commons this week aimed at keeping Northern Ireland running, and considering future plans, in the continued absence of a devolved government there.
Street Watch:
As always, if there are any street repairs in your area, such as potholes, pavement repairs or broken street lights, you can report these issues and concerns to me quickly and easily here so I can ask for the repairs to be investigated and addressed.
Surgeries:
I regularly hold surgeries to give you the opportunity to meet with me and discuss any concerns or problems you may have. These are held on Friday evenings between 5pm and 7pm.
