On Thursday 15th May, I had the pleasure of taking the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin MP, to see Alfreton train station and the work that needs to be done there to improve access for my disabled constituents.
Earlier this month I welcomed the announcement in Parliament that the station has been allocated funding as part of the Access for All programme.
At the moment, disabled constituents travelling at Alfreton station need to get on a train and change at Nottingham or Chesterfield, which is clearly not a desirable situation. I’m glad that the funding has been allocated.
Commenting, the Secretary of State said: “Nigel told me about his disabled constituents’ problems accessing train services from the station, so it’s great news that we’ve been able to allocate Access for All funding to improved disabled access.”
The improvements at Alfreton have been promised for a long time now. I reminded the Secretary of State of this and urged him to ensure the work at Alfreton is prioritised.
While we were in Alfreton, I also took the Minister to see Collis Engineering, a great local rail engineering firm that employs many of my constituents. Mr McLoughlin said: “It was good to visit Collis Engineering with its local MP, Nigel Mills, today. I was thoroughly impressed by their technological advancements, which have brought some great products at cheaper prices to the rail infrastructure.”
